He Wānaka Whītau Muka

The team from Hākui www.hakui.nz and Kahu Collective www.kahucollective.co.nz welcome you to learn the art of harvesting and extracting muka (harakeke inner fibres). The whītau muka are used to tie the pito (umbilical cord) of a pēpi at birth. This wānaka is for wāhine, tāne, Tāua, Pōua, mātua and pakeke, alongside our amazing kaiwhakawhānau/tapuhi.

The HĀKUI kaupapa is to support the revival of our customary birthing practices for Kāi Tahu whānau and provide resources for our Kāi Tahu midwives and their community. Please check out our website www.hakui.nz for other wānaka, resources and information.

This wānaka will be facilitated by two specialised kairaranga (weavers) from Kahu Collective with a brief introductory kōrero from Dr Kelly Tikao.
